Mosquito Bite Treatments

As there is no way to cure a mosquito bite, the only thing you can do is treat the symptoms until they go away. Relief from mosquito bites usually only takes a few days from the time you were bitten. It is important to try and avoid scratching mosquito bites, as if you scratch too vigorously you may break the skin and be at risk for something more serious like a bacterial infection in your skin. Excessive scratching may also lead to scaring.

Mosquito bites are characterized by soft, initially pale bumps on your skin that can become pink or red, as well as the dreaded itchy feeling. The bump that results from a mosquito bite may appear immediately or can take up to 48 hours to appear. If you're highly sensitive to mosquito bites, you may have an itchy feeling over a much larger area than just the bump. As you get older, you may find that mosquito bite symptoms become less pronounced the more times you are bitten. This often results in mosquito bites in babies and small children affecting them more than adults.

Mosquito Bite Itch Treatment

There are numerous treatments available for treating the itch of mosquito bites. Many products like after-bite are designed specifically for this purpose. The mayo clinic recommends hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion or a paste. The recipe for their recommended paste says to take about 1 teaspoon (about 5 milliliters) of water and mix with an equal volume of dry meat tenderizer. This mixture should then be applied several times a day until your symptoms subside. They also recommend icing as an alterative itchy mosquito bite treatment.

If you are experiencing a stronger reaction, or have a large number of mosquito bites, taking an antihistamine containing diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol Severe Allergy), chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlor-Trimeton, Actifed), loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) may ease the itching and swelling of the mosquito bites.

Mosquito Bite Swelling Treatment

The swelling of the bump associated with mosquito bites can often be a source of iritation. Icing the mosquito bite may help reduce the swelling. Alternative medicines for reducing a swollen mosquito bite include antihistamines, and anti-inflamatories such as ibuprofen.

In most cases the best treatment for mosquito bites is time. All the symptoms will usually disappear after only a few days.
